Reseller guides
For anyone weighing up selling hosting: what it involves, what it costs, and the parts people discover after they have signed their first customer.
- 01What is reseller hosting?Reseller hosting is one hosting account you split into many. You get WHM, create a separate cPanel account for each customer, set your own prices and bill them yourself — and we keep the server running, patched and monitored underneath you.
- 02Reseller vs master resellerA reseller plan lets you create cPanel accounts for end users. A master reseller plan lets you also create reseller accounts — customers who then create their own cPanel accounts. If you sell only to website owners, the ordinary reseller plan is cheaper and does the same job.
- 03Starting a reseller businessBuy a reseller plan, set up your own nameservers, define two or three packages, and sell to the clients whose hosting you already manage for free. Add billing software at about ten customers. Do not buy a server until the margin pays for the work.
- 04What is WHM?WHM is the control panel above cPanel. cPanel manages one website; WHM creates and manages the cPanel accounts. Every reseller plan includes it, and it is where you set packages, create accounts, brand the panel and see what the server is doing.
- 05Pricing your plansWork out your cost per account, add the support time you expect, then add margin — and do not be the cheapest. Sell yearly for the cash flow and the lower churn, and renew at the price you sold at rather than springing an increase on year two.
- 06White label and nameserversWhite label means the customer sees your brand, not ours: your logo in cPanel, your support links, and nameservers on your own domain. The nameservers are the part people skip, and they are the part the customer actually sees when they look at their DNS.
- 07Licenses a reseller needsOn a reseller plan, none — the licences are ours. The day you move to your own server you need a control panel, usually account isolation and a security suite, and billing software once you have more than about ten customers. Bought direct those cost more than the server.
- 08Reseller hosting vs a VPSA reseller plan is managed: we run the server, you run the business. A VPS gives you root, guaranteed resources and the licence bill that comes with them. Move when the plan is nearly full and the extra margin pays for the work — not when you simply want root.
