Who can register a .ac.ke domain
Institutions of higher learning registered in Kenya.
What the registry asks for
Proof that the institution is registered or accredited. The domain is activated once the registry has approved it, which takes a little longer than an unrestricted extension.
Worth knowing
Pairs naturally with Moodle hosting: the learning platform and the institutional email on the same address.
.ac.ke is run by KeNIC, which sets the rules for who may hold one and how transfers work. We file the registration with them on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a .ac.ke domain cost in Kenya?
Registration is Ksh 1,300 a year and renewal is Ksh 1,300. We do not use a cheap first year and an expensive renewal — the price you register at is the price it renews at.
Who can register a .ac.ke domain?
Institutions of higher learning registered in Kenya.
What documents do I need for a .ac.ke domain?
Proof that the institution is registered or accredited. The domain is activated once the registry has approved it, which takes a little longer than an unrestricted extension.
Can I transfer my .ac.ke domain to Hostsawa?
Yes. Unlock it at your current registrar, get the authorisation (EPP) code, and start the transfer here. A transfer costs Ksh 1,300 and adds a year to the registration. It completes within minutes. Your website and email keep working throughout, as long as the DNS records stay the same.
Do I need hosting as well?
No. A domain can be registered on its own and pointed anywhere you like, and you get full DNS control either way. Most people add hosting when they are ready to build the site.
Can I get email on a .ac.ke address?
Yes, with any hosting plan — unlimited mailboxes on your own domain, with spam filtering and webmail, readable in Outlook or on your phone.
How long until it works?
Usually within minutes of the order.
